Concord Grapes
Deep blue, dark purple or near-black, often covered with a whitish powdery waxy coating with slip-skin. Bold, sweet, tangy and distinctly musky with an intense, authentic grape flavor.
Look for plump, uniformly deep purple clusters. Green or reddish-tinged grapes will be tart and sour.
Not usually ripe until early September.
Determining Ripeness
- Taste TestPick and taste grapes from the top, middle and bottom of the cluster. They should taste sweet and fully flavored, not sour or green.
- Color vs. MaturityColor can fool you. Red seedless varieties often turn full color weeks before the sugar levels peak.
- Stem ConditionLook for cluster stems that are turning brown and woody instead of bright green.
